According to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. President Donald Trump has officially approved a 30-year civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia.

The agreement is expected to support the expansion of Saudi Arabia’s civilian nuclear program while placing U.S. companies at the center of developing the Kingdom’s nuclear infrastructure. U.S. officials say the program will remain under American oversight to prevent any military use.

However, several U.S. lawmakers and security analysts have expressed concerns that the agreement could increase nuclear competition and proliferation risks in the Middle East.

The agreement will now be submitted to the U.S. Congress for review and final consideration.
